Going to a new venue always has its challenges. When the biggest storm to hit Los Angeles since 2005 started on the
first day of the convention, I knew that this was going to be a really long weekend. I've always preferred to do the bulk of
my shooting outdoors. I like to use a lot of room and daylight. I've always found shooting indoors at most conventions to
be frustrating with horrible indoor lighting and cramped conditions.
I'm a notoriously slow starter and it takes me awhile to get going, but once I have some momentum, I'm fine. Since
outdoor shooting for Friday was rained out, I decided to give the indoor photo area a try rather than have nothing to show
for Friday. I really didn't have much of a choice. According to my data, I took my first photo of the convention shortly after
4PM, which was about 3 1/2 hours after I had arrived. I guess 3 1/2 hours of goofing off was good enough and I had
finally in the mood to shoot. The indoor area wasn't too bad. The lights were good enough to shoot without a flash. The
backdrop was a nice neutral color. At the very least, shooting at the indoor area was a good learning experience.
The weather was a bit more cooperative on Saturday. It didn't rain at all during the day, so it was time to break out the big
lenses and that's really what I'm most comfortable with. I think that when people come to this website to look at cosplay
photos, that's what they expect to see and that's what they're looking for. The quad area reminded me a lot of the
Anaheim Convention Center, where the main gathering area was also between a hotel and convention center. There
were times when it was really crowded, but it's something that you learn to handle. The day was fairly productive, and
after the sun went down, it was back to the indoor area.
Sunday was a interesting mixture of weather with some periods of light rain, but it at least it wasn't raining most of the
time. By then, I was a pretty comfortable at the indoor area and it wasn't so bad retreating to that when the rains hit.
Shooting on Sunday was fun. I took a lot of shots at the indoor area. I took a lot of shots outside when the weather was
clear. I even did some shooting in the rain, which I had never done before. For me, the last day of a convention is
usually really slow, but for this convention, Sunday was the day that I took the most cosplay photos.
In the end, this turned out to be the most cosplay photos that I've taken at an event since Anime Expo 2004 and under the
circumstances, that's amazing.
