| Dragonfest has been around for nine years, but it's mainly known as a martial arts convention. The guest list is filled with martial artists and action movie stars. I've been a resident of the Los Angeles area for more than 10 years, but I've never been to this particular convention, which claims to attract more than 5,000 attendees to its one-day event. This year, after large flyer campaigns at both Anime Expo and Ani-Magic, this convention hoped to attract the anime and cosplay communities to attend. The organizers of the convention also set aside a designated photo area and arranged for a cosplay contest. I decided to attend simply out of curiousity. I wanted to see if cosplayers and anime fans would attend this event and how well it would be received. Anime fans have always been particularly picky about the events that they go to and they tend to avoid events that aren't heavily weighted towards anime or video games. Martial arts and cosplay would certainly be an interesting mix. It sounded as if this would be a crazy, quirky, yet enjoyable event to close the year with. |
