If I could go to only one convention each year, it would be Fanime. There are a few conventions that I go to as a paying
member. Those tend to be smaller conventions where programming and guests aren't as interesting. There are a few
conventions that I attend as press, but Fanime is still my favorite convention to cover as a member of the press because of the
high level of guests, the facilities, and the helpfulness of the Fanime staff in getting me what I need in order to do my job
sucessfully. That combination doesn't exist at any other convention that I go to. Sure, there were a few glitches this year and I
almost missed covering a concert because of it, but it was resolved with a few minutes to spare. It's something that I can laugh
about at the end.
I certainly had a full plate at this convention. Sure, there was the MusicFest coverage. I was also asked to do a few cosplay
photo shoots this year. I was actually asked to do more than I had time for and so I had to turn a few down, which makes me a
bit sad. I never like to do that, but the press stuff has to come first. I had a lot of fun on these cosplay shoots. The DOLLS
shoot with cosplayer "Sephy" was the longest photo shoot that I've ever done with one person. It lasted nearly 3 1/2 hours and
included going to 3 hotels, a park, and a parking garage. It's very rare that a cosplayer has that much time for a single photo
shoot at a busy convention like FanimeCon. For the past two years, I've been able to do enough photo shoots at the
convention to complete a Cosplay Underground pictorial. Because of the lack of time, I wasn't able to do so this year and that's
unfortunate. I wasn't able to shoot as much cosplay as I would have liked. I really only had the first two days of the con to do
so. Because of the press coverage that I had to do, I expected it, but it still makes me a bit sad.
Still, I had an awesome time at FanimeCon this year. It's worth the trip from Southern California. I'd definitely love to come back
next year if I am able to do so. If not as a member of the press, I'd gladly pay for a membership.
See you next year,
Nergene Arquelada
