I'm going to go on the record and say that Mikomicon is officially my favorite convention to take cosplay
photographs at. Out of any convention that I go to, this location is by far the best. Fanimecon may
have many more cosplayers and some great places to take photographs, but most of those places are
still crowded and it's hard to find privacy. Some of the better locations there require a few blocks of
walking and some cosplayers simply don't want to do all that walking in downtown San Jose. At
Mikomicon, there are many places to hide and a suitable location for just about any costume.
Cosplayers don't seem to find walking around a nearly empty college campus on the weekend in order
to get good photographs, even cosplayers that I've never worked with before. It's amazing that for the
past two years, my cosplay coverage for this convention has been saved because I was able to find
cosplayers who were complete strangers to me but still willing to go the extra mile and go along with my
vision.
I've always believed in the potential of this location for photography purposes. Last year, my second
year attending this convention, I ventured away from the student union area and took a few photos with
cosplayers at the library. This year, I wanted to try a lot of new things and try to really show why I like
this convention location so much. For a convention, I didn't photograph a lot of cosplayers. I took
cosplay photos of only 6 cosplayers, which is a record low. However, I spent a considerable amount of
time with each of them since they were willing to go on a cross-campus excursion. The end result was
three pages worth of cosplay photos. A lot of them are some of my most favorite cosplay photos that I've
ever taken at a convention and I've been taking photos at conventions since the late 1990s. If it weren't
for the heat, which completely drained my energy during the day, I might have ended up with more
photos. I had a great time shooting here this year and I think I'm just beginning to discover the types of
things that can be accomplished at this convention. Next year I really want to do more. I wish more
people would come to this convention. I hope that by showing that this is a spectacular convention
location, it can convince more people to put Mikomicon on their schedules.
See you next year!
