The biggest thing that I noticed about Nisei Week 2008 was how much more scaled back everything was
from the year before. The parade was still big and the JSN Summer Matsuri were the same size they
have always been, but most of the events were much smaller than in previous year. It was odd to be
there on the first weekend and there was absolutely nothing going on in Mitsuwa Plaza or Weller Court.
The Tofu Festival was gone, replaced by the much smaller street fair. Entertainment on the JACCC
Plaza stage ended very early. The crowds didn't seem as large on both weekends. Even the once
ubiquitous Nisei Week volunteers were hard to find. I can't really explain it. Maybe not having
something as spectacular as last year's nebuta float caused a decrease in attendance.
On the bright side, there was the Anime Festival to keep me busy. Honestly, I don't mind doing grunt
work like carrying tables and chairs and setting up theater and PA equipment. I'm a big supporter of the
Anime Festival and want to see it at Nisei Week for many years to come. Despite not being too heavily
advertised, the turnout was better than last year and the cosplay contest was bigger than ever. There
was a huge lack of programming and vendors for the Anime Festival, but afterwards, the staff and
volunteers seemed pretty happy with how things went. From what I hear, it's changing location next
year again and I hope it all goes well.
For me it was a very fun two weekends. I loved meeting everybody, catching up with old friends and
making new ones. I love being productive. The first weekend was very busy for me with the Anime
Festival and parade. Those events always give me a ton of photos. I was happy to get more
photoshoots done for the J!-ENT Cosplay Underground project. The second weekend was more laid
back. The last day of Nisei Week involved a lot of ramen and yogurt eating as well as me dancing in the
street like a wacko, but nontheless it was a very memorable experience.
Nisei Week is always worth going to. It's a fantastic cultural festival with lots to offer. I enjoy it every
year and I wouldn't miss it for anything.
